Tai Chi for Health

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese form of exercise practiced around the world for its health benefits. This is a low-impact exercise performed in slow, fluid movements improving physical fitness and mental relaxation. The movements are slow, controlled, and gentle, emphasizing body alignment, weight transfer and internal focus. Both easy to learn and do, the forms are designed to improve flexibility and balance; enhance relaxation; increase strength and flexibility; develop better breathing; and improve overall health. Tai Chi is clinically proven to improve your balance and reduces the rate of falling. Movements can be done seated or standing making it ideal for people of almost any age or physical condition. This particular Sun style, developed by Dr. Paul Lam, is supported by the Arthritis Foundation, the Administration on Aging, and rated by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) as the highest evidence-based program for older adult health and wellness. Class is offered as partnership among SeniorsPlus, Gould Academy, Bethel’s Recreation Department, Bethel’s Age Friendly Community Initiative and MSAD#44 Adult Education.

1st Session: an elementary level class, targeting the deeper muscles of the core. A slow and steady progression of breathing and toning techniques. Mostly done on a Mat with some standing warm up and toning exercises. Classes will be held at the Methodist Church, 79 Main St, Bethel.

Lighthouse Lanterns

Brighten up your mid-winter nights with a ceramic lantern. In this one-day course, you will use slabs of clay to hand build a beautiful pierced lighthouse style lantern. The slabs of clay will be cut so that a tealight shines through the slits.

Try Out the Potter's Wheel

Calendar Jan 27, 2020 at 6 pm, runs for 1 week

Come experience working on the potter's wheel in this two-hour session for adults. Working on the wheel is an age-old practice of using your hands and a spinning wheel to create useful and beautiful objects out of clay. You will learn the basics of centering the clay on the wheel, opening the form, and pulling up the walls to make everything from bowls to vases. Up to three completed pieces per person will be glazed in your choice of color and will be ready for pick up approximately two weeks after class. Your finished projects will be microwave and dishwasher safe. No previous clay experience is required for this class. All tools and supplies will be provided by the clay studio.

Woodworking

Whether you are a beginner and want to learn more about woodworking or if you are an expert woodworker, then this class is for you. This is an eight week course where you can build small or big. The first week will be an informational session talking about machinery safety and what to expect in this class. Brainstorm about what you would like to make, then come back the next week with your wood ready for class. Tools are supplied.

Learn traditional fiddling. There is an emphasis on playing and learning tunes by ear. Practice bowing techniques and how to perform traditional tunes with your own personal flair. You will need to bring your own fiddle.

Students should be proficient in playing a number of tunes on their own. Come with your tune list. We will add to it and improve on the tunes you already know. Our emphasis will be playing and learning tunes by ear. Practice advanced bowing techniques and how to perform traditional tunes with your own personal flair. You will need your own fiddle.
